How To Fix Your Leaking Hose Tap -13 Simple Steps
HOW TO FIX A LEAKING HOSE TAP
We have prepared a short video on how you can repair you own leaking hose tap in just 13 steps.
As a maintenance & emergency plumber, we have fixed leaking & burst hose taps every day, all day for over 30 years. However, it is something that you may be able to do yourself, if you follow the instructions & have the correct tools.
If at any stage through the process you don’t feel confident, call your local plumber.
Leaking hose taps are not an expensive repair, but if you damage the pipes behind the wall in the process of repairing your leaking hose tap, it will also become an emergency & the job will require a plumber & cost you a lot more than the original leaking hose tap job.
This video shows how to repair your leaking hose tap, but we have also done a short video on how to replace your leaking hose tap.
Written Instructions: How to fix a leaking hose tap
The tools you require are -
Shifter
Paint scraper or Stanley knife
Pointy nose pliers
The Materials you require are –
Tap grease
Body Washer
O-ring
Jumper Valve
Step 1
Turn off your water at the mains.
We have a video tutorial on how to do this too if you are unsure: How to turn off water main
Step 2
Back at the hose tap, turn it on & allow it to drain. Once drained, use the shifter to loosen the tap. Place the shifter on the middle section, under the tap handle to loosen.
Turn the tap anti-clockwise & unscrew the top section of the tap.
You should now have the tap in 2 pieces + the old jumper valve which may still be in the tap or may have fallen out.
Step 3
Using the pointed nose pliers, remove the jumper valve if it is still inside the tap.
Step 4
Using the paint scraper or stanley knife, remove the red body washer.
Step 5
Turn the top section of the hose tap clockwise to open up the tap & expose the tap spline or thread. Turn until the tap thread is totally exposed & you can now see a small black O-ring.
Step 6
Using the pointy nose pliers, remove the old small black O-ring.
Step 7
Replace the old O-ring with the new O-ring.
You should be able to roll this down into position using just your hands. There is a grove that this black small O-ring sits in.
Step 8
With your tap grease, apply a liberal amount of grease all over the spline or thread of the tap, include lubricating the O-ring.
Step 9
Now that the tap thread is lubricated, turn the tap back anti clockwise to hide the O-ring & thread.
Step 10
Place the new tap body washer (red) into place.
Step 11
Insert the new jumper valve into the tap.
Step 12
Putting the tap back together, place this section of the top of the tap to the other section, turning clockwise, screw them together & tighten using your shifter.
Step 13
Turn your water back on.
If your tap is still leaking, you may wish to replace it at this time or call your plumber.
