How to Shut Off Hot Water Tank
How to shut off your hot water tank or isolate your hot water system
Emergency No Hot Water
If the case of an emergency, like a burst hot water heater or a burst hot water flexi-pipe under the sink or even a leaking hot water tap, you don’t need to shut down the water at your water meter, you can isolate the hot water by shutting down the hot water heater which will elevate the emergency while you wait for your plumber to arrive but still give you water to your cold water taps & toilet.
HOW TO SHUT DOWN YOUR HOT WATER TANK
Locate your hot water heater.
The most common place to find your hot water heater is outside, but yours may be inside the home, possibly in the laundry or a cupboard or even under a staircase.
As per the pictures shown, you will have a water line coming through the wall with either a valve or a T-top style tap.
This is the isolation tap for your hot water heater.
Turn this tap clockwise as far as it will allow to you turn.
You should be now turning off the cold water feed to your hot water heater.
If your hot water heater is leaking and this is why you want to isolate your hot water, depending on the problem with your hot water heater, it should soon stop leaking.
If the hot water heater tank has burst, it may take a while before the water leak eases. If the problem was a leaking hot water tap or pipe inside, you can check to see if the leak has stopped.
If the tap is still leaking, then you may also have another problem with your hot water heaters isolation tap.
You will need to contact your plumber to have this repaired.
