How To Repair Your Leaking Hose Tap in 7 Steps

Tools you will need-

  • Shifting spanner

  • Wire brush

Materials you will need –

  • New hose tap – Check yours as there are male or female taps.

  • Thread tape

Step 1
Turn your water off at the water meter.
If you’re unsure how to do this, watch our, ‘how to turn off your water’ video & blog.

Step 2
Drain the hose tap.

Step 3
You need to remove the old hose tap. At this time, it is important to be careful not to damage the pipe work behind the wall. The tap may be tight to turn or seized into position. If the tap does not want to turn at this time, we recommend you call your trusted maintenance plumber.
Using your shifter spanner, place the shifter on the brass nut on the tap close to the wall, turning anti clockwise, loosen the tap & turn until it is off.
Is your tap fitting a male or female? This is important, as only the correct one will fit.

Step 4
Using the wire brush, remove the excess thread tap from the thread of the pipe out of the wall. You want to achieve a clean surface as possible.

Step 5
Re-apply new Teflon thread tape.
Turning the new thread tap clock wise, wrap the new tape approx. 14 times.

If you’re not sure how to apply thread tape, here is a video to show you ‘How to apply thread tape correctly’.

Step 6
Screw your new tap (male or female thread) onto the wall, using your shifter spanner, until the tap is tight. You will feel the thread bond to the new tape that you have applied.
Sit the tap straight & tight in position.
Turn the tap off.

Step 7
Turn your water back on to the home.
