How to Shut Off Gas Hot Water Heater in 4 Steps

There may be a time when you need to urgently shut down your gas hot water system.

A gas hot water heater has both water & gas going to the system which needs to be shut down especially in an emergency until your gas technician can attend.

By learning how to isolate the water & gas to your hot water system, you may allow yourself to still have access to cold water for other household necessaries like toilet & kitchen use.

If you're unable to isolate your hot water system, you may have to turn off the mains water to the home.

Reasons to Shut Off Gas Water Heater

Leaking hot water tap in the home.
Burst hose or pipe to a hot water tap inside.
Leaking water from the hot water system
Leaking or burst pipe at the hot water system
Gas smell at the hot water system.

The following steps are the same for both LPG or Natural gas hot water heaters.

Step 1
Locate your gas hot water heater.
Step 2
Locate the yellow handle tap.
Yellow indicates GAS tap.
This is the pipe that supplies gas to your hot water heater.

Turn OFF the yellow tap.
Rotate the tap clockwise. (Righty Tighty).

You have now shut down the gas supply to the hot water system.
If there is a pilot light or burner, then the flame should now be out.
Step 3
Locate the water supply to the hot water system.

The water pipe is usually the lowest pipe out of the wall. It will be a tap or a valve on a water pipe.
Turn this tap right until it closes.

Test that you have turned off the water to the hot water heater by turning on a hot water tap inside the home. No hot water should come out.

If water is still coming out of this hot water tap, you may not have turned it off enough or the tap is seized.
