How do I change a gas bottle on a BBQ?
Follow these 4 steps to turn off your bbq gas bottle safely.
Step 1: Turn OFF the gas bottle by turning the main green wheel clockwise
This will lock down your gas bottle. Note: Gas connections are reverse thread, or opposite to water connections.
Step 2: Remove the gas regulator
This is where you will turn the opposite to water. This gas connection is usually hand tight, but if it is too tight, you can use a shifter.
To remove the gas regulator, you will turn right, or clockwise.
These directions will also be on the green wheel for you to follow.
Now you have successfully removed the gas regulator from the gas bottle, screw on the yellow protective cap if there is one.
At this time, we recommend you take a look at the seal of the regulator:
Check the black rubber ring is intact and not perished
Check that the thread is not damaged & clean from any scum build up
If this is all clean and intact you are safe to proceed.
Step 3: Replace the gas bottle
If you already have a replacement 9kg gas bottle you can continue to replace it.
Place your replacement 9kg gas bottle in position and have them aligned so the connections are straight.
Bring the gas regulator up to the gas bottle.
Gas is reverse thread, so turning opposite to water, turn the regulator left or anti-clock wise to tighten.
Make sure this is as tight as you can turn.
Step 4: Check for a gas leak
With a household spray bottle, mix some detergent 1:10 to make a soapy spray.
Spray this soapy water over all the connections around the gas valve, hose & regulator.
If a bubble grow, then you have a gas leak which needs attention.
If there are no bubbles, this indicates NO leak, you can now continue with your BBQ.
If you are not using your gas BBQ straight away, we recommend you turn OFF the green gas wheel to the OFF position until it is used. Always keep your 9kg gas bottle turned OFF when the BBQ is not in use.
