What is a blocked vanity basin?

A blocked vanity basin is when the water in the vanity basin does not draining away. Blocked vanities are very common and a problem Moyle Plumbing fixes almost every day.

Top 3 signs that you have a blocked vanity basin.

1) If there is a smell coming from your bathroom or basin.

2) Water does not drain

3) Gurgling noises coming from your vanity, floor waste or drain outside the bathroom.

Your vanity drain should either be connected to the center floor waste or to the disconnector connector trap (D.T) outside your bathroom.

How to prevent a blocked vanity?

Vanity basin are used to wash our hands and brush our teeth. Even with just these two uses, they still collect soap scum, toothpaste, body secretions and hair which mat together forming a black, greasy gunk over time.

The easiest way to prevent your vanity from blocking, is to not allow any hair to fall pass the vanity drain grate, but collect and place it in the bin.

Running hot water down the drain regularly to help loosen and wash away any residue soap, toothpaste or body secretions.

Never allow cotton buds, tooth brushes, ear plugs or any foreign objects down the drain. Under the vanity is trap and all these items get stuck in the trap causing the vanity to block. Once these items are down the drain and stuck in the trap, soap and toothpaste then collect and contribute to the vanity drain blocking.

If these items actually get past the trap under the vanity, they can then get caught in the floor waste or the disconnector trap outside the bathroom causing the vanity and possibly the shower and bath to block.

Can I clear a blocked vanity basin myself?

It is not recommended that you attempt to unblock a vanity or bathroom drain yourself. There are a few things that can go wrong, which can flood your home or cause water damage.

Before calling your plumber, try running hot boiling water down the drain, being extra careful transporting this boiling water, then pouring it slowly down the drain as not to overflow the vanity.

You can also try purchasing products like Draino or similar, following the careful instructions on the packet.

If your vanity has physical items down the drain causing the blockage, then both the above recommendations will not fix the problem.

Do I need a plumber to unblock a vanity basin?

The quick answer to this is Yes, most likely. If you attempt to remove the trap under the vanity sink, you may cause damage to the trap or seals, which may leak causing water damage to your vanity cupboard.

If the blockage is not located in the vanity trap, you will then need special tools or equipment to reach the blockage that is further down the drain.

Your maintenance plumber will be easily able to diagnose where the blockage is and how to fix it quickly.
